What is Element451's LMS integration?

Element451's LMS integration is a feature that seamlessly syncs real-time academic and enrollment data from your institution's Learning Management System (LMS) into Element451. This process automatically pulls course and enrollment information, enabling Element451 to leverage these academic insights for segmentation, automation, and personalized student support.

Which LMS platforms does Element451 integrate with?

Currently, Element451 offers native integrations with Canvas, Brightspace, and Blackboard. Support for OpenLMS is coming soon. Additional platforms may be supported through custom configurations or APIs.

Is the LMS integration a one-way or two-way sync?

The Element451 LMS integration is a one-way integration. This means that Element451 reads and ingests data from your LMS but does not write any data back to your LMS. Element451 functions as a view-only data model, with your LMS remaining the definitive source of record for the data.

What types of data are synced from the LMS to Element451?

The integration pulls three primary categories of academic and enrollment data into Element451: Courses, Sections, and Enrollments. This includes comprehensive details such as course names, codes, departments, dates, instructor names, student enrollment records, and grades. Specific fields for each category are mapped from your LMS to Element451 for consistent use.

For a complete list of supported fields, including mapping details, review the help article for your specific LMS (Canvas, Brightspace, Blackboard).

How frequently does Element451 sync data from the LMS?

The sync timing varies depending on the LMS:

β—¦ Canvas provides real-time updates via live events.

β—¦ Brightspace and Blackboard sync data overnight on a daily schedule.

What are the main benefits and use cases of leveraging LMS data in Element451?

Integrating LMS data into Element451 unlocks powerful capabilities to improve student engagement, retention, and success. Key benefits and use cases include:

  • Identifying and Supporting At-Risk Students Early by using data like grades, attendance, and participation to trigger alerts and interventions.

  • Engaging and Motivating StudentsΒ through personalized messages, celebrating achievements, or offering timely support, such as tutoring resources.

  • Enhancing Student Access to Data by allowing students to view their course details in StudentHub.

  • Creating Targeted Segments for students based on course data filters (e.g., grade drops, excessive absences).

  • Triggering Strategic Workflows to automate communications (emails, texts, push notifications) or assign tasks to academic advisors or students.

  • Providing AI-Powered, Context-Aware Help through Bolt Agents who have a 360-degree view of a student's record and can offer personalized support.

Who needs to set up the LMS integration, and what permissions are required?

The integration setup requires administrative access in your LMS and specific read permissions:

  • Blackboard: A System Administrator is required to log in and register a REST API application. The user performing authentication in Element451 must be a Blackboard System Administrator with read access to Courses, Users, Memberships, Organizations, and Grades.

  • Brightspace: A Brightspace admin with access to manage the extensibility tool is needed. Element451 only requires read permissions.

  • Canvas: An Admin is required to create a Developer Key. The user authenticating in Element451 must be a Canvas Administrator with read access to Courses, Course Sections, Users, Enrollments, Assignments, and Grades (the last two are optional but recommended).

The integration setup process is detailed in the help article for your specific LMS. Review the article for the most accurate and comprehensive information (Canvas, Brightspace, Blackboard).

Can I manually add or edit course data directly in Element451?

No, you cannot add or edit course data in Element451 directly. The "Courses" feature is designed solely to display data synced from your LMS or imported files. While manual addition of individual courses is technically possible, it is rarely necessary and is primarily used for testing purposes.

How can I review imported semester data?

To review your imported semester data, navigate to Settings > Integrations in Element451 and select your LMS from the left-hand menu. On the "Imported Semesters" card, you will see details such as the Semester, Status, Added At, Started At, and Last Sync Completed At.

Where can I find more detailed information on field mapping for my LMS?

Detailed field mapping tables, showing exactly which LMS fields map to which Element451 fields, are available in the "LMS Field Mapping" of each LMS help article (Canvas, Brightspace, Blackboard).

What should I do if I notice missing data or fields not populating as expected?

If you encounter missing data or unexpected field populations, it is recommended to:

  • Check LMS Configuration: Ensure that the relevant fields are properly configured and populated within your source LMS.

  • Review Permissions: Verify that the Element451 integration has the appropriate read permissions for all necessary data within your LMS.
