In this article you will learn:

  • What dynamic content communications are and when to use them

  • How to create a dynamic content communication

Dynamic content in Campaigns allows you to create different versions of the same message for multiple audiences. This allows you to send one message with personalization for the recipient. Dynamic content with personalization can be used for both One-Time and Ongoing Communications. For example, swap out a paragraph of a prospect drip campaign email to be relevant to the student's intended major or change the CTA link of a button to match the funnel stage of the recipient (apply versus deposit).

You can set various aspects of the email (subject line, content, sender) to change based on conditions you set for different groups of recipients. Conditions are like filters that "know" which version to display to the recipient based on things like their geographic location or academic interest.

Another example of when you might want to create a dynamic content email is if you're writing to recently admitted students and want to have a paragraph specific to in-state, out-of-state, and international students. Rather than build three different emails, you would create one email with personalization settings specified. All other aspects of the message could stay the same, or you could make additional customizations, such as a different subject line for each group.

Create a Personalized Communication

Refer to these steps to get started building an email or SMS communication. Once you have the communication started, click on the Personalization drop down menu under the Audience selection.

1. Conditions are what determine which version of your communication a recipient will receive. Click Add Condition to start creating them.Β

2. Additional instructions will appear to guide you through creating your conditions. The conditions will correspond to the versions of the message you will create. Your condition options are Date Condition, User Segment, and User Segment Reference. The Dat Condition refers to the send date, User Segment allows you to create filters within the condition section (as you would usually in the People module), and User Segment Reference allows you to choose from your saved Segments.

πŸ“™ Note: Don't forget to name your version in the text box at the top of the Condition settings sidebar!

πŸ“™ Note: If a recipient meets conditions for multiple versions, the version that they will receive will be for the first one whose conditions they meet.

That is, if you have two sets of conditions and the recipient meets both, they will be sent the content associated with the first condition they meet in the order displayed on the Conditions tab.

When you look at the list view of your conditions back in the overall communication editor sidebar, you have several options in the icons on the right: edit the version conditions, duplicate them, delete them, or move them up or down in priority.

3. As you configure each component of your email moving on, you will be able to select the version you are editing. The Default version will go to any student who does not meet either of the version conditions.

5. If you would like to create multiple version of the email content (in addition to different versions of the subject line, sender, etc.), go into the content editor. Click on the row you would like to create multiple versions of.

The row will be highlighted in purple and a dropdown menu labeled "Audience" will appear in the top right.

The default option will already be available. Click Add Audience to find your other versions.

πŸ“™ Note: Don't forget to edit the content for your SMS as well! Scroll to the bottom of the sidebar and toggle between your different versions to edit the content and/or the Outbound Phone Number.

6. To see how the different versions of the message will appear to recipients, click the Preview tab in the email editor or look at the section on the right of the SMS editor.

8. To test the versions of your message, open the Test tab. Select the version to send a test of and which channels you would like to test.

9. Once you are happy with the content and the tests, your personalized communication is ready to send! Just like you would with any other Communication, set the communication to send to a segment or use it with a workflow communication.
