Update 3:50pm EST | 4 March 2025
Resolved
Akamai has confirmed to Element451 that their incorrect classification of 451.io as an adult content domain has been corrected, restoring its proper education category. This should resolve access issues for partners using Akamai’s services.
Other network security or filtering services were not affected, and the issue was entirely beyond Element451's control. However, we have asked Akamai for further details on how this occurred and whether Element451 can take any steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Update 5:10pm EST | 27 Feb 2025
Impacts for partners not using Akamai Security Services
At this time, we have not identified any issues affecting other partners. However, other network security or content filtering services (such as Cloudflare, Barracuda Gateway, and Zscaler) could potentially cause similar disruptions.
If you experience any connectivity issues with Element451, please contact our support team. Additionally, we recommend checking with your IT or network team to ensure that 451.io
has been whitelisted in any network or content filtering tools used for your campus networks to maintain access.

Important Update for Partners Using Akamai Security Services
We recently discovered that our API domain (451.io
) has been mistakenly flagged by Akamai for adult content, causing connectivity issues for some customers whose networks rely on Akamai for security filtering. This appears to have happened sometime late on 26 Feb 2025.
We have reported and escalated this issue with Akamai to get them to correct this false classification at a global level. However this may take some time to be fully resolve.
In the meantime, affected institutions can manually whitelist all subdomains of 451.io
in their Akamai security settings to restore access. If your institution is experiencing issues, we recommend checking Akamai’s filtering settings and allowing traffic to our doma
ins. Your school's IT or network security teams should be able to make this change. If you need further assistance to make this configuration change you can also contact Akamai's support.
Even if you are able to whitelist the domain, we ask that you also report the issue to Akamai support to ensure they resolve the global issue as quickly as possible. Thank you for your patience as we work to resolve this issue!
Connecting to Element451 via another network (mobile hotspot, home Wi-fi, etc) as those networks will most likely not have the content filtering in the same way as your your institutional network has.
We will post further updates to this page as we have them.
